  • the vegetarian paradox

The other day, Angee and I went for a wander/drive out past the power station & garbage dump and stumbled upon a gigantic greenhouse that I wasn’t aware existed.  After making our way though the bedding plants and the vegetables, we came upon a creepy little plant called a “sensitive plant”, which in much the same way as a venus fly trap closes it’s leaves upon contact. Mostly, it gave Angee the heebies, but I had to bring it home.

Historically, I don’t have the best luck with houseplants.  Any plant that comes through the door tends to be well on its way to becoming compost almost immediately (R.I.P. Kathy-the-houseplant). I like to think that being a vegetarian, any plant that makes its way into my domicile, can’t possibly leave alive, much the same way as I imagine the omnivores work with strays wandering into their houses.

My voracious herbivorousness aside, there may be hope for this one, as evidenced here:

Yes indeed, that’s a goddamn sprout up there. There may be hope for this one yet!

Bear in mind that this plant is approximately the size of a golf ball at this point, but as Angee pointed out to me, they can get quite big, and with any luck, this little guy will. When these things reach full size, there’s something both creepy and appealing about them. I’ll leave you of a brief clip of how these “Sensitive Plants” got their name:

Wish me luck with this poor little bastard, I may just need it!
